I am migrating our Minecraft Servers from VMWare to this Hyper-V workstation.
VMWare: HP DL360e Gen8
Win 10 Hyper-V: HP Z840
Intel Xeon E5-2430 v2 (2.5GHz/6-core/15MB/80W).
Intel xeon e5-2620 v4 8 core 2.1 ghz
The Intel Xeon E5-2620 v4 (8 cores, 16 threads) is significantly better than the E5-2430 v2 (6 cores, 12 threads), offering roughly 35% higher multi-threaded performance and 16% faster single-thread speeds. The v4 is newer (Broadwell vs. Ivy Bridge), supports faster DDR4 memory, and is more power-efficient.
Performance and Specifications Cores/Threads: The E5-2620 v4 has 8 cores/16 threads, while the E5-2430 v2 has 6 cores/12 threads. Speed: The E5-2620 v4 features a 2.1GHz base, 3GHz turbo, while the E5-2430 v2 has a 2.5GHz base, 2.7GHz turbo, but the v4’s architectural advantages make it faster overall. Memory: The E5-2620 v4 supports 4 channels of DDR4, while the E5-2430 v2 supports 3 channels of older DDR3. Efficiency: The E5-2620 v4 runs on a lower 85W TDP compared to the 95W TDP of the E5-2430 v2.
Conclusion For any new build or upgrade, the Xeon E5-2620 v4 is superior due to higher core counts, faster IPC (instructions per clock), and modern DDR4 memory support. The E5-2430 v2 is only relevant if replacing a chip in an existing FCLGA1356 motherboard.
I am installing new Ubuntu 24.04 servers for Minecraft. 3 Bedrock and 3 Java to migrate over from the VMWare minecraft servers.
